What Happens When A Business Energy Supplier Goes Bust?
If your business energy supplier goes bust, here’s what you can expect to happen:
- Supply Continues - Your gas and electricity will not be cut off.
- New Supplier Appointed - Ofgem will appoint a "Supplier of Last Resort" (SoLR) to take over your account.
- You Become a SoLR Customer - You'll be automatically transferred to the SoLR, who will contact you. Their tariffs may differ from your previous ones.
- You Can Switch - You're not obligated to stay with the SoLR and can shop around for a better deal.
- Billing - Meter readings will be taken. You'll receive a final bill from your old supplier and new bills from the SoLR (or your chosen supplier).
- Credit/ Debt - You should receive refunds for credit and will still be responsible for any debt.
Who Has Replaced My Business Energy Supplier?
If your energy supplier went bust, Ofgem appointed a new "Supplier of Last Resort" (SoLR). Check the table above for details about your new energy supplier. The SoLR will contact you with their tariffs, which may differ from your old ones. You're not obligated to stay with them.
Use our comparison engine to find a better deal and switch. The SoLR will arrange meter readings and billing. You'll get a final bill from your old supplier. Remember, you can switch away from the SoLR at any time.
What Should I Do If My Business Energy Supplier Is Going Bust?
If you suspect your energy supplier is in financial trouble, there are several proactive steps you can take. Keep records of all communication with your supplier, including emails, letters, and call logs as this documentation can be invaluable later.
Carefully review your contract, paying attention to any clauses about insolvency or termination to understand your rights. Submit up-to-date meter readings to ensure accurate billing during any transition. While it might be tempting to switch immediately, it's often best to wait for official confirmation of the supplier's situation, as switching prematurely could lead to complications.
Stay informed by keeping an eye on news reports and Ofgem announcements for reliable information. Be prepared to receive communication from either your current supplier (if they’re still operating) or a new supplier appointed by Ofgem. Be patient, as these situations can take time to resolve.
Finally, if you have any specific concerns, consider contacting a consumer advice organisation or legal professional specialising in energy matters for tailored guidance.
