Start Your Business Electricity Meter Installation with Love Energy Savings

Commercial electricity meters are crucial to manage your electricity usage. Having the correct electricity meter installed can help you reduce your bills by managing wasted energy.

To start your electricity meter installation, you will need your Meter Point Administrator Number (MPAN). Your MPAN is used to identify the electricity supply to your property. This can usually be found on your meter or a recent bill.

It’s important to consider the type of electric meter you need. Electricity meters often have more options than gas meters. This can include half-hourly meters for large businesses and multi-rate meters.

When you complete your business electricity meter installation with us, you can speak to our team to discuss the best meter option for you.

To get started, simply complete our easy-to-use meter installation form. We aim to complete your meter installation in as little as 2 weeks.

How Your MPAN Status Affects Your Electricity Meter Installation

Your MPAN status refers to the current state of your electricity meter. This will let you know whether your meter is ready for supply or if work needs to be done to access the supply.

Your MPAN status can be in one of four main states:

  • Live
  • Disconnected
  • New
  • De-Energised

Here, we explain the most common meter status types and what they mean for your electric meter:

  • Live Electricity Meter

If your electricity meter is live, it is set up and ready to use. This means you can compare electricity deals to find the best tariff for your meter.

    Start Your Quote

  • Disconnected Electricity Meter

If your electricity meter is disconnected, your MPAN will not be reused as the service cable has been removed. This means you will need to speak to a network operator to arrange a new cable. After this, you will be booked in with our DNO and given a new MPAN.

Once you have your new MPAN, you can start your electricity meter installation with Love Energy Savings.

    Find Your Network Operator

  • New Electricity Meter

If a new MPAN has been created for your meter but it still needs data such as Profile Class and a Meter Time-Switch Code, your meter will be referred to as ‘new’. The service cable may not be installed, but it is planned for installation.

If your meter has a new status, you can contact Love Energy Savings, for our best electricity meter installation quotes. Our team will guide you through the process of installing a new meter.

    Start Your Meter Installation

  • De-Energised Meter

If your meter is de-energised, the meter fuse has been removed despite the service cable still being in place.

A de-energised meter has been removed by the supplier from the premise. Any business with a de-energised meter will need to contact the supplier who removed the meter. Your supplier will then start the process to reinstate the electricity meter.

What Type of Commercial Electricity Meters Are Available?

Choosing the right type of electricity meter for your business can help you manage your bills and your energy usage.

Here, you find some of the common business electricity meter types and how they work.

Standard Electricity Meters

Businesses with a standard, single-rate electric meter will have their usage charged at a flat rate. This is likely the option for businesses using most of their energy in peak hours.

This isn’t the most ideal method of commercial electricity monitoring as you will have to submit manual readings.

Commercial Smart Meters

Smart electricity meters are designed to take much more accurate readings.

A smart meter monitor sends readings to your supplier automatically, removing the need for estimated billing. This means you’ll only pay for the energy you’re using.

An electric smart meter can be a great option for small businesses that don’t meet the criteria for a half-hourly meter. Commercial smart meters will still offer you the benefits of automatic meter readings to help you manage your energy usage and costs.

A smart meter's accurate and regular readings can also be beneficial when carrying out a business energy audit. The up-to-date and accurate readings will allow you to easily identify how much electricity you’re using and when you are consuming most of your electricity.

Commercial smart meters are often free to install, as your electricity supplier covers the setup costs.

Multi-Rate Electricity Meters

As the name suggests, a multi-rate energy meter charges different rates at different times of the day. You will pay one rate during peak hours and a cheaper rate during off-peak hours. These are also sometimes known as two-rate meters.

The most common type is an economy 7 meter. This meter type offers a cheaper rate during a 7-hour window. Businesses can also choose a three-rate meter. This offers you a day rate, an evening and weekend rate, and a night rate.

Multi-rate meters are often installed for businesses using most of their energy outside of peak times.

A Three-Rate Meter also considers weekend usage. Much like typical peak and off-peak times, there is also a weekend rate that is accounted for on a three-rate meter.

Meters For Large Usage Businesses

Half hourly meters are required for businesses using at least 100,000 kWh of electricity each year. If your business uses more than 70,000 kWh of electricity a year, you can choose to install a half-hourly meter.

Half-hourly meters provide the most accurate billing available by submitting automatic meter readings to your supplier every half hour. They can also provide in-depth consumption data for businesses seeking to analyse and reduce their energy usage.

The team at Love Energy Savings can provide advice on arranging a new connection at your premises.

  • Do I Need a Meter Operator (Mop) & Data Collector (DC)?

If you have a half-hourly electricity meter, it is a legal requirement to appoint a meter operator and data collector. Your MOP contract will cover meter maintenance, fault fixing, and the essential telecommunication infrastructure required to provide your chosen supplier with your consumption data.

At Love Energy Savings, we can appoint your MOP for you. We work with one of the UK's largest energy data management providers to find you an MOP contract at a cost much lower than your current supplier.

  • What if My Business Has Multiple Sites?

Businesses with more than one site will often have multiple electricity meters with different contracts and varying contract end dates. This can make it difficult to keep on top of your business energy bills.

Switching to a multi-site electricity deal could save your business time and money. Your electricity rates and renewal dates will be consolidated into one plan. You can also benefit from greater negotiating power, potentially giving you access to cheaper electricity deals.

If you have more than one site, let one of our connection experts know when requesting your new meter. They can provide advice on whether you could switch to a multi-site electricity deal.

  • What is COP Metering?

COP stands for Code of Practice in the metering world and there are several types of metering COPs:

    • For Half Hourly Meters - COP1, COP2, COP3, COP5, COP6, COP7, and COP10
    • For Non Half Hourly Meters - COP8 and COP9
    • For Asset Metering Systems - COP11
    • For Metering Equipment installed in Metering systems for COP1 to COP10 - COP4

COPs are metering boxes that outline the technical requirements and minimum standards for metering systems. When a COP metering box is installed, it can be connected to a local meter supply point to provide accurate energy consumption patterns and automated meter readings (AMRs).

If you have already spoken to your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) and know which COP you have, you can now arrange a meter installation with us.

These readings are then sent directly to the supplier. This can help a larger business get a handle on their energy consumption to help them become more energy efficient.
